Shooting Schedule

In this post i will be embedding a Shooting Schedule for the construction of our Short. Schedules like this one are essential when producing a media product as it means we are practically setting ourselves interim deadlines for when scenes need to be shot. If we stray too far from this, then we run the risk of losing time to edit the footage.

Location Research and Comparison

In this post i will be looking at the locations we intend to use and how they compare to locations we have seen in other, similar media products.

In the beginning of our film we intend to show our main character Chris waking up in his bed. For this scene we need an average teenagers bedroom.

Some would suspect something similar to the above, a messy room filled with the teenagers various belongings. In our film however the protagonist in not an average teenager and is instead a young carer with a very neat personality. It is because of this difference in personality that i believe Chris would instead have a bedroom similar to the one below.

As well as a Bedroom, in order to try and keep with the convention of very little changes in the location, we only use a Kitchen, Living room, Office and lastly a Garden. Below i have included images of locations which are similar to those that we plan to use.

Each of these play an essential role in showing the audience the characters personality.

Both the Kitchen and the Living room will be dressed in very basic items, such as plain wooden chairs and a small dining room table in the kitchen, and then a small sofa and a relatively cheap television in the living room.

The office in particular needs to tell the audience more about Chris and his personality. We plan to use very few props in this scene along with a dull, greyscale colour scheme in order to show this best.

Lastly, the use of a rose garden is a reference to Chris' mother Rose, the picture above shows what colour rose we plan to use. By having a rose that is starting to lose its colour and turn white, we are able to show the audience that she too is starting to become frail and lifeless.

Cast List and Costume

In the weeks running up to the construction part of our Short, we made a list of people whom we felt were ideal for each of the characters parts.

Male Actor - Sam Morris
Character - Chris

Female Actor - Debbie Sweet
Character - Rose

Male Actor - Mr Leach
Character - Mr Fischer

We had hoped to use these people as our actors but with the late withdrawal of Sam Morris because of school related issues we had to locate a new Chris fairly quickly. In a panic we looked to each other for ideas as to who could spare some time to be our missing actor, as a result, we turned to Adam Holland. Thankfully he accepted and we were back on track with precious little time to spare.

As we filmed the remainder of the film we started to realise that the 5 minute restriction was getting closer and closer so we made the group decision to take out large parts of the original story in order to decrease the running time. In doing this we sadly had to remove the part of Mr Fischer and almost irradicate the second half of our Short.

The final Cast List is:

Male Actor - Adam Holland
Character - Chris

Female Actor - Debbie Sweet
Character - Rose

In order for our actors to take on their given roles we needed to give them a costume to wear. After some discussion as a group about the characterisation of both characters Demi had the task of finding us the right costume to suit their personality.

Chris is a 19 year old who is forced to look after his ailing mother whilst holding down a full time job and managing the house at the same time. His office job leaves him wearing almost always formal suits which contradicts the assumption that all teenagers are up to date with the latest fashion trends. Instead Chris leaves his hair and clothing very flat and formal respectively without much care for what those around him are doing.

Below are some examples of what we expected Chris to look like:

Rose (Chris' Mum) has a medical condition involving her lungs, leaving her very weak and barely capable of completing even some of the most basic of household tasks. This is unlike many 40 year old women we see in Drama who are often always on the move, living their ordinary life, working, paying bills, doing house work and cooking. Instead Rose is restricted to the limits of her precious rose garden, planted by her beloved and mysterious Billy.

Given her lifestyle, she is unable to really wear much more than a robe.
