We first decided that it would be best to keep the new poster simple, in order to achieve this we agreed to use only one image. This image would exemplify the themes and possible storyline within the short. As we decided that the relationship between Chris and his mother Rose is the main point of the short that it would be best to design a poster around this.
This picture included a small round table with two sets of knives and forks, two mugs and two plates, but most importantly the two crossed roses in the centre of the table.
Once we had the image we imported it to Photoshop and added a simple black background with a copy of the films name in the same font that we used in the titles along with a simple tagline "She was a thorn in his side."
After this we added the essential pieces necessary to make our poster look authentic. We included the Binary Productions name, actors names, credits in the industry standard font (With use of Steeltongues), and lastly a bold red "Out Now" to grab audience attention.
After adding all of these elements we have the finished product:
A movie poster at its very core needs to advertise the film it displays and also convince those who see it, to come and watch the actually film. It does this by capturing a character, scene or even a dominant theme in the film itself and then portrays it in a "simple" and easy form for the audience to process.
Conventions of Movie Posters:
- Bold, contrasting colours to grab the attention of passers by. (In our case, the colour red was a powerful colour to use as it grabs a persons eye more so than other colours.)
- Actors names and Tag lines are often scattered around the title/logo of the film.
- A Credit Block is required by MPAA Guidelines.
- The background picture often focusses on one subject, whether that be a theme, a scene or a character. Posters tend to keep the amount of subjects to a minimum so they do not distract from their main subject too much.
School of Rock:
Conventions:
- Main Subject - Jack Black's Character.
- Secondary Subject - The Class to the right and left of him.
- Keeping the background white, allowing the clothes worn by the class to stand out.
- Using genre specific tag lines such as "We don't need no education" (From the Pink Floyd Song - Another brick in the wall) and "Come on feel the noize" (From the Slade Song - Cum on feel the noize).
Reign of Fire:
Conventions:
- Main Subject - The Dragon coming down from the top left breathing fire across the poster.
- Secondary Subject - London burning in the background with dragons and helicopters flying above.
- This time we have a darker background picture with lighter text.
- "Fight Fire with Fire" is a well known phrase and fits the theme of the movie.
- The title "Reign of Fire" is in a font which is darker than the tag lines and so stands out as the title of the movie. Also, the flaming font connects to the flames that will most likely be seen in the movie.
- "The Battle Ignites July 12" is very bold even though it is at the bottom of the poster.
As well as a Poster, i have also produced Magazine Review in order to both advertise and review our final film.
